Beginning
in John 12 verse 20 we find the Greeks seeking to know Jesus and
though not spoken this seems to be a signal for Him that the next few
days make the beginning of the end of His earthly ministry to Israel.
His work as revealed in the parable of the fig-tree and its change in
fruitfulness is about to come about. If we do a study on the fig-tree
and the few verses of scripture about it we can learn just what this
parable is as truth and indeed goodness, beginning with Gen. 3:7
where it states this; “The
(natural) eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were
naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves
aprons.”
1Kings
4:25 “Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his
vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days
of Solomon.” (Mic 4:4
“But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig
tree; and none shall make them
afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it.”)
2Kings
18:30-33
“Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD
will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the
hand of the king of Assyria. Hearken
not to Hezekiah: for thus said the king of Assyria, Make an
agreement
with me by a present, and come out to me, and then
eat every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and
drink every one the waters of his cistern: Until I come and take you
away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of
bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that you may
live, and not die: and hearken not to Hezekiah, when he persuades
you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Has any of the gods of the
nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of
Assyria?” (Isa
36:13-19, 20-21
“Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews'
language, and said, Hear the words of the great king, the king of
Assyria. Thus said the
king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to
deliver you. Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying,
The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered
into the hand of the king of Assyria. Hearken
not to Hezekiah: for thus said the king of Assyria, Make an
agreement
with me by
a present, and come out to me: and eat every one of his vine, and
every one of his fig tree, and drink every one the waters of his own
cistern; Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land,
a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards. Beware
lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Has any
of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the
king of Assyria? Where are
the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are
the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my
hand? Who are
they
among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out
of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?
But
they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's
commandment was, saying, Answer him not. Then came Eliakim, the son
of Hilkiah, that was
over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of
Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their
clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.”)
Habakkuk
3:16-19
“When I heard, my belly trembled; my lips quivered at the voice:
rottenness entered into my bones, and I trembled in myself, that I
might rest in the day of trouble: when he comes up unto the people,
he will invade them with his troops. Although
the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall
fruit be
in
the vines; the labor of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall
yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there
shall be
no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in
the God of my salvation. The LORD God is
my strength, and He will make my feet like hinds'
feet,
and He will make me to walk upon my high places. To the chief singer
on my stringed instruments.”
