Colossians Study Outline

Continuing with the Seven-Fold Prayer of Paul for Us of Colossians

Jesus Christ the Creator God

Colossians 1:18b-19

"…that in all things (in everything) he (Jesus Christ) might have the (what?) preeminence. (He is above everything. In verse 19 it puts the cap on it.) For it pleased the Father (the whole Godhead has been involved in everything that Christ has done) that in him should all fullness dwell:"
I may use this verse a little later, but for now, just come back with me to Isaiah chapter 9. This fits right in with what Paul is saying over and over here in Colossians, that Jesus Christ is the visible manifestation of the invisible Godhead. And the Godhead of course is the whole Trinity. Here we have them in Isaiah chapter 9 way back in the Old Testament. So it is not just a figment of Paul’s imagination, it is something that fits with all of Scripture.

Isaiah 9:6-7
"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: (Who are we talking about? Jesus of Bethlehem) and the government shall be (future, no, but is rather active during this current administration of Grace which was from His ascension on) upon his shoulder; (here’s the part that I like) and his name shall be called (when He once again set up His rule and reign) Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. (These are all terms concerning Jesus of Nazareth born in  Bethlehem and His active government now) Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this."
And when will all this happen? When He comes to set up His kingdom and establishes His throne where David’s was on Mt. Zion in Jerusalem. No, but from heaven where His throne is now active within mans soul. And until that time, as we’re going to see the word "peace" a little later in the chapter, the world will know No peace or rest until they accept His Redemption and enter His Salvation. My goodness, we as a nation, like to pride ourselves for the last several years at least since the end of World War II and the Korean & Vietnam Conflicts. We’ve never actually been at peace. No we have not, darkness has increased and with it chaos and wars and rumors of wars. Why? Because we live in perilous times of mass confusion and gross deception. We in America have been fortunate, enough, but tell you what. At the millennial turn of this century, I read in a daily paper, that there were 40 + wars raging on the planet. Oh, not great big world war type things, but for those people involved, it’s war. It’s misery. It’s heartache. It’s losing everything. Like we see in the middle east with the ideological persuasion of the Muslims, Islam and the political part of ISIS, which are butchers and murdering hundreds into the thousands of woman, children and college students who refuse to bow to them and their radical ideology. Many of these people are Islamic in their faith but of a different ideology then ISIS. ISIS wants its evil figures in every nation of the world and if one resists they will butcher and murder them, matters not who they are. Evil is as evil does, thoughtlessness and lawlessness prevail.
So the world does not have peace tonight, nor will it have until a predetermined point in time, when His Peace will be without end as He rules upon the throne of David. This throne can be on earth or in the Heavenly Jerusalem, on Mt. Zion where all of God's Hebrew (a type of Israelite after the likeness of Abraham and Isaac who walk in trust and faith) children reside with Him. The other verse I'm sure of is John 14, and you know it, as well as I do. I doubt that there’s very many in the whole audience that don’t know this chapter. Coming down to verse 8, after Jesus has said all these things and then Philip responds.

John 14:8-9
"Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew (show) us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet (you have not known Me) hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?" See how plain that is. Jesus said, "if you’ve seen Me you’ve seen the Father."

John 14:10
"Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me?…"
You know that leaves people hanging by a thread but come back to Colossians and Paul clarifies it. That Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified Christ, is the physical, visible manifestation of the invisible Godhead. We have to take it in by faith. We can not understand it with our carnal, natural minds but by the Eternal Spirit in us, we can. Most can not understand a three person concept of the Godhead, that can function as one. But the Bible teaches it, when the fog has cleared. We take it all in by faith or by simply trusting and one day they will understand it, I'm sure they will, but for now, you and I just take it in by faith – that Jesus Christ is the Creator of everything, He is the visible manifestation of the invisible Godhead and that in Him, verse 19 again says, “that it (He) even pleased the Father.” I think that would also include by implication, the Holy Spirit. How by eating of the Lamb of God the flesh (meat) of His Word revealed to us, is to eat of Him, the Life giving Word, the hidden manna of Revelation 2:17. For when food (meat and bread) is digested it becomes part of our body as does the Word when received and eaten by faith. Faith being an action word, a verb, it is not stagnant nor is it static, hindered, tied down, faith is progressive as is the “I AM that I AM” of Exodus 3:14. True meat increases our strength in the knowledge of HIM because it is a body building a protein.
