Now
the betrayal of Jesus our Passover
Keep
in mind that we are still in the evening hours of the same day of the
inspection of the lambs chosen for slaughtering during which time
they are being inspected for blemishes and disease.
This blood letting will take place within the Temple walls which are
inside of the city of Jerusalem. But our LORD will be taken outside
for His illegal and fraudulent execution at the hands of both
Gentiles and the Hebrews. The parallel passages are Matthew 26:47-56,
Mark 14:43-50 and Luke 22:47-53, before continuing with John's
account I want to look at one of the others to fill in here.
Jesus
prayers in the garden
Found
in John 18:1-11, Mark 14:32-42 and Luke 22:39-46
Matthew 26:36-46 “Then
came Jesus with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the
disciples, Sit
here, while I go and pray yonder.
And He took with Him Peter and
the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.
Then said He to them, My soul is
exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry here, and watch with Me.
And He went a little further, and fell on His face, and prayed,
saying, O My Father, if it be possible,
let this cup pass from Me: nevertheless not as I will, but as You
will.
And He came to the disciples, and found them asleep, and said to
Peter, What,
could you not watch with Me one hour?
Watch
and pray, that you enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed
is
willing,
but the flesh
is
weak.
He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O
My Father, if this cup may not pass away from Me, except I drink it,
Your will be done.
And He came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.
And He left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time,
saying the same words. Then came He to His disciples, and said to
them, Sleep
on now, and take
rest:
behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the
hands of sinners.
Rise,
let us be going: behold, he is at hand that does betray Me.”
Jesus
taken by force to the High Priest
parallel
passages in Matthew 26:57-58, Mark 14:53-54 and Luke 22:54
John 18:12-14, 24 "Then
the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and
bound Him, and led Him away to Annas first; for he was father in law
to Caiaphas, which was the High Priest that same year. Now Caiaphas
was he, which gave counsel to the Jews (in John 11:49-52), that it
was expedient that one man should die for the people."
Peter
denies the LORD
parallel
passages Matthew 69-72, Mark 14:66-68 and Luke 22:55-57
John 18:15-18, 25 "And
Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so
did
another disciple: that disciple was known to the High Priest, and
went in with Jesus into the palace of the High Priest. But Peter
stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which
was known to the High Priest, and spoke to her that kept the door,
and brought in Peter. Then said the damsel that kept the door to
Peter, Are not you also one
of this man's disciples? He said, I am not. And the servants and
officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold:
and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed
himself."
The
Inquisition begins of Jesus by the High Priest
Parallel
passages Matthew 26:59-66, Mark 14:55-64 and Luke 22:66-71
John 18:19-24 "The
High Priest asked Jesus of His disciples, and of His doctrine. (Luke
11:53-54, 20:20) Jesus answered him, I
spoke openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the
temple, where the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said
nothing.(Psalm
22:22, 40:9)
Why
ask you this of me? ask them which heard Me, what I have said to
them: behold, they know what I said.
And when He had thus spoken, one of the officers which standing by
struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Why answer You the
High Priest in this fashion? Jesus answered him, If
I have spoken no evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why
smite you Me?
Now Annas (as retired priest
and father-in-law to)
sent Him bound to Caiaphas (Annas' son-in-law) the High Priest." (John
18:13)
Peter
denies Jesus Again
parallel
passages in Matthew 26:71-75, Mark 14:69-72 and Luke 22:58-62
John 18:25-27 "Simon
Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore to him, Are not
you also one
of His disciples? He denied it,
and said, I am not. One of the servants of the high priest, being his
kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, said, Did not I see thee in the
garden with Him? Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock
crew."
Jesus
is now brought to Pilate
parallel
passages in Matthew 27:1-2, 11-14, 11-14, Mark 15:1-5, Luke 23:1-5
John 18:28, 33-37 "Then
led they Jesus from Caiaphas into the hall of judgment: and it was
early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they
should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. Pilate then
went out to them, and said, What accusation bring you against this
man? They answered and said to him, If he were not a malefactor, we
would not have delivered him up to you. Then said Pilate to them,
Take him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore
said to him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: That
the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which He spoke, signifying
what death He should die. Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall
again, and called Jesus, and said to Him, Are You the King of the
Jews? Jesus answered him, Say
you this thing of yourself, or did others tell it you of Me?
Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests
have delivered You to me: what have You done? Jesus answered, My
kingdom is not of this world:
if My kingdom were of this world, then would My servants fight, that
I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is My kingdom not from
here. (of
this place,
by implication is within)
Pilate therefore said to Him, Are You a king then? Jesus answered,
You
say that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came
I into the world, that
I should bear witness to the Truth.
Every
one that is of the Truth hears My voice. (John 7:17, 8:47, 10:26-27, 1John 3:14, 19, 4:6, 5:20)
